At Oxford school being on time for class is important for many reasons including:
- The Education Act of Nova Scotia and the Halifax Regional School Board require that all students “attend school regularly and punctually.” (Section 24-1b)
- Tardiness is disruptive to classes in session when the latecomer enters the room.
- Research clearly indicates that learners who are regularly on time for school experience greater personal success.
As such, Oxford school will use the following policy to encourage students to arrive on time:
Students who are inexcusably late (in the mornings, after lunch, or between classes) will be given a 15 minute after-school detention at the end of the school day. They will serve an additional 15 minutes for each occurring late after that. We will reset the lates on a daily basis.
Students who are more than 5 minutes late will be directed to an alternative setting for the remainder of the period and will make up any missed work after school.
If punctuality continues to be a problem, school administration will act accordingly. Consequences may include but are not limited to:
- School Service
- In-school suspensions
- Out of school suspensions
