JH Phone Use Policy
The need to maximize time on task during the school day and eliminate those things that inhibit focused learning are targets all educators continuously address. While it is undeniable that personal digital assistants (PDAs) can be effective tools for learning, the benefits have often proven to be vastly outweighed by the distraction they pose while present in the classroom. Phones and personal devices used in schools have become a significant challenge for students(i.e. the curious increase in time spent in bathrooms, coincidently meeting best friends in quiet parts of the school, the increased request to listen to music – so as to better concentrate on their work, mastering typing with the device still in the pocket, needing to view the time despite the large clock in plain view on the wall, taking secretive pictures and video clips of others in the classroom, etc.) There are an endless number of current academic studies/scholarly articles available to help better understand the distraction they have become for everyone, especially students, during instructional time.

Please note: students are aware that phones being heard or seen during instructional time (anywhere in the building) will be held in the office until the end of the school day. A second time will require a phone call home. Please join me in an effort to help students regain their learning time by eliminating the distraction of personal devices. All students have been made aware that the public Wi-Fi access within the school is limited to lunch hour (12-1:00) and after school hours.

Halifax All-City Music is starting a new Gospel Choir this year. This choir is for singers from grades 5-9 and will rehearse at Cornwallis Street Baptist Church on Mondays from 4:00-5:30. The choir will be conducted by Cindy Cain. No audition required, no fee, everything is free. Come join us and sing! This Monday!
